Chairs and Institutes

The Faculty comprises institutes and research centres associated with the individual chairs. Many of these institutes have a long-standing tradition. One example is the Institute for Air and Space Law, which was founded in 1925 as the world’s first institute dedicated to air law. The institutes are small, specialised academic units within the University and make a decisive contribution to the Faculty’s academic profile. Many institutes have libraries specialising in their respective fields.

The institutes listed below are predominantly grouped according to the legal fields of public law, private law and criminal law. It should be noted, however, that the areas of work of some institutes and facilities span several disciplines and, for example, cover both private law and certain areas of public law. Researchers are also active in various research units and groups.

The Faculty of Law also hosts a number of affiliated institutes. They are usually referred to as institutes "at the university" ("an der Universität). Affiliated institutes are legally independent bodies that are closely linked to the University through a cooperation agreement. They expand the academic offerings of a university by conducting research and providing further education in very specific specialist areas, and are proof that the University of Cologne has long understood how to mobilise the interest of external institutions in its research work.

Via "Cologne University's central library catalogue" you can consult the catalogues of most of the institute libraries online.
