Teaching

A particular hallmark of the Cologne faculty is its international focus in teaching.

Students can initially qualify locally by choosing an appropriate area of specialization or acquire the Certificate in United States' Law from the Chair of US Law during their studies. They are also supported in their participation in numerous international moot courts organized by the faculty.

The Faculty of Law maintains over 60 partnerships within Europe alone and encourages its students to spend semesters abroad at partner universities, particularly in EU countries, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Financial support is provided by scholarships, particularly as part of the ERASMUS program and the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). Student exchanges are also made possible by the Faculty's cooperation with Duquesne University Law School in Pittsburgh, the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai, the National Law School of India University in Bangalore and the Gujarat National Law University. The Faculty's Center for International Relations maintains the network, supports students in planning and carrying out their studies abroad and is the point of contact for international students regarding their studies at the Cologne Faculty.

An outstanding feature of the faculty is the large number of binational degree programs with renowned foreign partner universities (in particular the Université Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne), the Università degli Studi di Firenze, Istanbul Bilgi University and Istanbul Altınbaş University). They were often the first of their kind in Germany. The faculty has done pioneering work here. The successful binational Bachelor's (German-French, German-Turkish and German-Italian law) and Master's degree programs (German-Turkish business law and German-Italian law) are completed with the acquisition of the corresponding double degrees from both universities. In principle, the Bachelor's degree courses also lead to the regular university law degree qualifications in the respective foreign country and at the same time open up a shortened route to the German first examination.

Since the winter semester 1987/88, the Faculty of Law has been one of the first in Germany to offer a Master's degree course in German law for students who have graduated abroad. Within this framework, special cooperation exists not only with our Chinese partner universities, but also with the Faculty of Law at Ivane Javakhisvili State University in Tbilisi (Georgia). The postgraduate course on German law, which is organized with the support of the DAAD and the German Federal Foreign Office, aims to provide Georgian lawyers with basic skills in traditional German legal fields.
