Die Akademie für europäischen Menschenrechtsschutz der Universität zu Köln veranstaltete am 15. und 16. Dezember 2025 in Köln den Workshop „Writing and Publishing in the Law of the ECHR and Other International Human Rights Systems: A Workshop for Early Career Researchers“.
Die Veranstaltung stellte die zweite Ausgabe eines Workshopformats dar, das erstmals im Februar 2024 stattfand (weitere Informationen hierzu finden Sie unter https://www.echrblog.com/2025/06/how-can-early-career-researchers-shape.html), und knüpfte an den dort begonnenen wertvollen Austausch an. Während sich die erste Ausgabe vor allem auf die Europäische Menschenrechtskonvention konzentrierte, wurde der thematische Fokus des Workshops im Dezember 2025 auf weitere internationale und regionale Menschenrechtssysteme ausgeweitet.
Angesichts des weltweiten Anstiegs von Menschenrechtsverletzungen und einer zunehmenden Distanzierung von etablierten Systemen zum Schutz der Menschenrechte gewinnen Menschenrechtsbildung und -forschung zunehmend an Bedeutung. Vor diesem Hintergrund zielte der Workshop darauf ab, einen Raum für fundierte, kritische und zukunftsorientierte Auseinandersetzungen mit den europäischen und internationalen Menschenrechten zu schaffen, zugleich ein Gemeinschaftsgefühl zu fördern und einen intensiven Austausch unter Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen zu ermöglichen.
Das Programm umfasste fünf Panels mit hochrangigen und erfahrenen Forschenden sowie Praktiker*innen, deren Beiträge wertvolle Einblicke in die akademischen wie auch in die praktischen Dimensionen der Menschenrechtsarbeit boten:
- Panel 1: Comparative Perspectives from other International Human Rights Systems
- Panel 2: Writing in the Field of the ECHR: Critical Perspectives
- Panel 3: Publishing on the ECHR and other Systems: Perspectives from Editors
- Panel 4: Publishing Strategies for ECRs working in a Crowded Field: Quest for Originality
- Panel 5: Bringing Research to the Attention of Judges and Members of International Human Rights Systems
Ergänzt wurden die Panels durch interaktive Kleingruppensessions, in denen die Teilnehmenden Feedback zu laufenden Projekten erhielten. Insgesamt brachte der Workshop 50 Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen vor Ort in Köln sowie mehr als 60 weitere Teilnehmende online zusammen und schuf so eine lebendige und dynamische Atmosphäre des Austauschs und der Diskussion.

The Academy for European Human Rights Protection at the University of Cologne organised the workshop “Writing and Publishing in the Law of the ECHR and Other International Human Rights Systems: A Workshop for Early Career Researchers”, which took place in Cologne on 15 and 16 December 2025.
This event marked the second edition of a workshop first held in February 2024 (for further information, please see https://www.echrblog.com/2025/06/how-can-early-career-researchers-shape.html) and continued the fruitful exchange initiated on that occasion. While the first edition focused primarily on the European Convention on Human Rights, the 2025 workshop broadened its scope to include other international and regional human rights systems.
Human rights education and scholarship have become more important than ever at a time when a global rise in human rights violations and a growing disengagement from established human rights protection systems can be observed. Against this background, the workshop aimed to create a space for rigorous, critical, and forward-looking engagement on European and international human rights law, while cultivating a sense of community and fostering valuable exchange among early career researchers.
The programme comprised five panels with highly experienced and distinguished researchers and practitioners, whose contributions provided valuable insights into both academic and practical dimensions of human rights law.

- Panel 3: Publishing on the ECHR and other Systems: Perspectives from Editors
- Panel 4: Publishing Strategies for ECRs working in a Crowded Field: Quest for Originality
- Panel 5: Bringing Research to the Attention of Judges and Members of International Human Rights Systems
These panels were complemented by interactive small-group sessions in which participants received feedback on ongoing projects. The workshop brought together 50 early career researchers, who participated in person in Cologne, as well as more than 60 additional participants who joined online, creating a dynamic and lively atmosphere of exchange and discussion.
